How to Build a Dome in Minecraft
Domes turn a plain round tower into a landmark. They are also the classic shape for observatories, greenhouses, igloos and underwater bases. Here is how to build one without guesswork.
1. Pick the size
A dome's height is half its diameter. For a tower roof, use the tower's outer diameter (or add 2 for an overhang). For a standalone glass dome over a base, 25–41 blocks is a good range. Enter the diameter in the dome generator and note the total block count.
2. Build the base ring
Layer 1 is the widest ring. Build it first, exactly like a circle: mark the centre, count out the radius in four directions and follow the template.
3. Build upwards, layer by layer
Move the layer slider up by one, go one block higher, and build the next ring. Keep "Show layer below" on: the pale blocks are the ring you just built, so you can see exactly where the new ring steps in. The lower layers step in slowly; the top layers step in fast and finish in a flat cap.
4. Materials and styles
- Glass – observatories and greenhouses. Mix tinted and clear glass for a pattern.
- Copper – ages from orange to green over time, perfect for domes on grand buildings.
- Snow blocks or packed ice – igloos.
- Quartz or white concrete – modern and classical buildings.
5. Underwater domes
Build the dome with a shell thickness of 1 in the thick style so there are no gaps. Once the shell is closed, fill the inside with sand or gravel, or use sponges to remove the water, then clear it out. Placing a door blocks water, so an airlock entrance is easy.
